Tweak a Week #3 -Apple, Pear, Kiwi, Melon & Pineapple

Today we discuss Pears and Kiwi.

Pears – a delicious fruit that has most of the same qualities and health benefits as apples. They make a great choice to provide some variety in your fruit choice. Pears are also rich in the water soluble fiber, pectin, actually higher than apples! Pectin makes them great for controlling cholesterol and promoting gastrointestinal health.

Pears are regarded as a “hypoallergenic fruit” and seem to produce less an allergenic response and are frequently recommended as a first fruit to introduce to infants. As with all fruits, they are healthiest eaten raw and with the skin.

Kiwi – This is a fruit worth getting to know! It actually has twice the vitamin C of oranges. In a study done by Rutgers the Kiwi was found to be the most nutrient dense fruit of the 27 fruits evaluated. They are low in sodium and high in potassium, and high in fiber. They are a truly powerful anti-oxidant preventing the amount of oxidative damage to DNA and were shown to actually stimulate cellular repair of damaged that has happened. Because of its anti-oxidant properties it is helpful in preventing heart disease and lowering cholesterol.

Kiwi also seems to act as a natural blood thinner and promote respiratory health. The high potassium and magnesium content make them good for controlling blood pressure.

These delicious fruits that look like a large brown fury egg are a wealth of health. This fruit may be peeled. Some choose to cut the fruit in half and scoop the meat out with a spoon. They are tart when under ripened but increase in sweetness as they ripen.
