Figs – Figs are another of nature’s candy like dates. They are also high in fiber, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, and manganese as well as being a very highly alkaline forming food. Figs are also good for the intestines and promoting regularity due to their fiber content. The calcium content in figs is significant, 3 times that of a glass of orange juice. And the potassium content is extremely high, much like dates.
Figs are grown on the ficus tree and are a very delicate and perishable fruit, therefore they are often dried in order to preserve them. Dried figs are easily portable and not highly perishable so they make a great snack for the athlete with adequate natural sugar and fiber to supply energy and nutrition.
